An interactive Dryland Forage Species Adaptation program has been developed to assist land managers in selecting the correct forage species best suited to their land. Information can be accessed by defining specific criteria including, but not limited to, soil zone, salinity, desired use and timing of use, soil texture, stand longevity and soil pH. Forty-five species, both tame and native, are included. Each species includes photos and a detailed description including yields, recommended stocking rates and other management information. Seeding rate and seed cost calculators are integrated as well. Select one of the following links for either a high-speed or dial-up version of the program.

 Forage Programs and Funding Opportunities

The Alus Saskatchewan Assiniboine Project is offering payment for producers to convert marginal land to forages, conserve wetlands and sloughs, conserve native plants, and to install hen houses or bat boxes within the Assiniboine River Watershed.

To learn more, click here or go to the Assiniboine Watershed Stewardship Association website.

Ducks Unlimited Canada has teamed up with Crop Production Services to offer incentives to producers in targeted areas.  To learn more about this program click here.

Ducks Unlimited also offers a Marginal Areas Program aimed at grain producers to seed fragments of cultivation into forage and a Forages in Rotation program for landowners wishing to add forages as part of an annual cropping rotation. Contact DU for more info.
